Apple App Store users and other subscribers to Apple services, such as Apple Music in India, had problems using their credit or debit cards. Users and subscribers are reportedly required to use India’s unified payment interface or UPI.

Apple India Promotes UPI Payments

The new law was approved by the Reserve Bank of India in 2021. The law prohibits Apple Services from automatically charging debit and credit cards.

Once enacted, the new law requires approval before all transactions are completed.

Apple’s withdrawal of card payments in India was first discovered on May 5. Apple’s support page only stated that some payment transactions could be rejected due to regulatory changes.

The support page hasn’t been updated yet, but The Economic Times of India reported that Apple has confirmed that the changes are permanent.

Apple has announced that, in light of the Reserve Bank of India or RBI regulations, all credit and debit cards will no longer be available for purchase or subscription in the Apple App Store or other Apple services after June 1.

Indian users must use the UPI service to load the funds required to pay for their subscription or purchase into their Apple Wallet.

No more credit or debit cards

AppleInsider reported that Indian customers need to fund their Apple ID balance if they want to purchase media, apps, or subscriptions through Apple.

A ruling passed by the Reserve Bank of India in October 2021 required banks and other financial institutions to approve credit and debit cards for auto-renewable subscriptions before completing transactions.

According to the new mandate, merchants will need to obtain user approval through transaction notifications, electronic mandats, and additional verification factors (AFA).

The bank or card issuer will reject transactions that do not meet the requirements of the new law.

Due to this change in regulations, Apple users in India can purchase apps from the Apple App Store, subscribe to Apple TV +, purchase Apple Music, and use their credit or debit cards to watch movies from iTunes. You will not be able to purchase programs.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple customers in India are now beginning to see service interruptions. To prevent subscription interruptions, users are encouraged to fund their Apple ID balance.

The new requirements apply to recurring transactions. This means that if you have an Indian debit or credit card and you have an Apple subscription, these changes will affect your transactions.

Some transactions may be rejected by banks, card issuers, and other financial institutions.

Customers can pay with their Apple ID balance to enjoy their subscription without interruption. Users can also increase their Apple ID balance through the App Store code, UPI and online banking.

In addition to encouraging developers to warn customers about payment changes, Apple has also launched a promotion that gives Indian customers the opportunity to add money to their Apple ID and get a 20% bonus.

In March, India said no to Apple’s replay iPhone request.

In April, Apple announced that it would build an iPhone 13 model in India.
