Colorado Sports Corporation Announces 2022 Sportens Hall of Fame Class | Sports

Colorado Sports Corporation announced on Monday that it will be inducted into the 2022 Sportens Hall of Fame. Includes former professional soccer players, legendary golf instructors, and the historic Air Force men’s basketball team.

The entrance ceremony, hosted by The Gazette and ANB Bank, will take place on October 25th in the Broadmore World Area and will include a reception, dinner and a silent auction.

The winners are:

Vincent Jackson: After graduating from Widefield and Northern Colorado, Jackson continued to play wide receivers in the NFL for 12 seasons. After quitting his football, Jackson turned his attention to the community and founded the Action 83 Foundation. This organization supports military families with a focus on education and the mental and physical well-being of children.

Ann Finke: Finke, a golf instructor, has worked for a country club in Colorado for 37 years, consolidating his position as a local legend. She spent 18 years as a coaching director, teaching over 39,000 golf lessons. Most of them were for junior golfers. She was also the first woman in the Nebraska and Colorado section of the Professional Golfers Association and the first female PGA Club professional in Colorado.

Ted Castaneda: After his own cross-country career, Castaneda coached the University of Colorado for 39 years, first at Palmer High School and then at the University of Colorado. He coached both men’s and women’s teams and led to 11 Southern University Athletic Meet Championships. Prior to coaching, he ran 5,000 and 10,000 in the 1976 Olympic Trial and participated in marathon events in the 1980 Olympic Trial.

Gerry Burnett: Longtime football coach Burnett has led the Air Academy High School team for 11 years, winning six conference titles and competing in two state semifinals. He then moved to college football, coaching Fort Lewis and the northwest, and then head coaching at CU from 1999 to 2005. His buff won the title of the 2001 Big 12 Conference and his team made six bowl appearances.

Judy Burnett: After establishing a women’s volleyball and basketball program at Manitou Springs High School, Burnett has been a coach for over 20 years. She has also been Chairman of the Colorado Girls Sports Coach for four years since 1990. Burnett then served as Assistant Commissioner for the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), where she developed the first CHSAA Sportsmanship Summit in 1998. ..

1991-1992 Doherty High School Women’s Basketball Team: This Spartans team has the honor of being the first women’s basketball team to win a state championship in Colorado Springs. Spartans defeated Boulder High School, a team that won three consecutive titles before Doherty’s victory. Spartan, coached by Karl Krug and led by future CU player Erin Scholz, has won 39 games in a row.

2003-2004 Air Force Men’s Basketball Team: The Falcons team won the program’s only regular season conference championship, setting a record of 22-7. This is also the most victories in the history of the program, including the record of 12-2 Mountain West. The Falcons have won a major bid for the NCAA tournament, which first appeared in 42 years. The Air Force was led by Joe Scott, who was elected Mountain West Coach of the Year.

Lee Hall: Colonel F. Don Miller Sports Service Award-winning Hall has been Director of the Pikespeak Junior Golf Program for over 30 years since 1978. He held a weekly 18-hole tournament. 1 year old and 9 hole tournaments for 10 to 13 years old. In 1983, Lee launched the women’s division of PPJG, where high schools in southern Colorado recognized women’s golf as a varsity sport.

Mayor John Suthers: The Sayre Tat Sportsman Award-winning Suthers is the 41st Mayor of Colorado Springs, his position since 2015. He has played an important role in the branding activities of the US Olympic City, making Colorado Springs a solid sports city and tourist destination.

Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb: The Hill Climb, which won the Pikespeak Community Legacy Award, was first held in 1916. It was started by entrepreneur Spencer Penrose and the 2022 iteration will be the 100th event. The iconic race has given Colorado Springs national and international recognition.
