Apple is expanding the use of recycled materials throughout its products
The company is also advancing new disassembly technologies as part of its closed-loop goal.
Apple today announced new details regarding the increased use of recycled content throughout its products. For the first time, the company introduced Certified Recycled Gold, more than doubling the amount of recycled tungsten, rare earth elements and cobalt. Almost 20% of all materials used in Apple products in 2021 were recycled. This is the highest ever usage of recycled content.
In its 2022 Environmental Progress Report, Apple announced new details on this progress, recycling innovation initiatives, and clean energy.
The company also shared new ways customers can celebrate Earth Day, such as using Apple Pay to support the World Wildlife Fund. With educational resources, carefully selected content, and engaging activities across different platforms, Apple customers can appreciate the beauty of nature wherever they are, learn about key issues such as climate change, and protect the planet. You will have the opportunity to help the cause and the community you are doing.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, said: Policies and social initiatives. “Our rapid innovation has already helped teams build tomorrow’s products with today’s products. The path other companies follow as global supply chains move to clean electricity. Is shown. “
More recycled and responsibly procured materials throughout Apple products
Apple has pioneered innovations in material recycling and sourcing to accelerate change across the industry. To help recycling partners gain this momentum around the world, Apple today announced the latest recycling innovation, Taz. This is a machine that uses an innovative approach to improve material recovery from traditional device recycling.
In 2021, 59% of all aluminum shipped by Apple will come from recycled sources, and many products will have 100% recycled aluminum in their enclosures. Apple has also made great strides towards its goal of eliminating plastic from packaging by 2025. In 2021, plastics made up only 4% of packages. Since 2015, Apple has reduced the amount of plastic in its packaging by 75%.
In addition, the 2021 Apple products included:
- 45% certified recycled rare earth elementsSignificant increase since Apple introduced recycled rare earth elements into devices.
- 30% certified recycled tinAll new iPhones, iPads, AirPods, and Mac devices use 100% recycled tin for the main logic board solder.
- 13% certified recycled cobaltUsed in iPhone batteries, which can be disassembled and returned to the market by Apple’s recycling robot Daisy.
- Certified Recycled GoldFor the first time in Apple products, the main logic board and wire plating on the front and rear cameras of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. To reach this milestone, Apple has pioneered an industry-leading level of traceability and built a gold supply chain of exclusively recycled content.
Retrieving more material for use in future products will help reduce mining. From just one metric ton of iPhone components disassembled by Apple’s recycling robots, recyclers can recover the amount of gold and copper normally extracted from 2,000 metric tons of mined rock. Apple is also working to extend the life of its products through refurbishments. In 2021, Apple sent 12.2 million devices and accessories to new owners for reuse, extending their lifespan and reducing the need for future mining. Ultimately, Apple aims to use only renewable or recyclable materials in its products. This is a goal announced in 2017 and shows the company’s path to design and material procurement.
A machine that uses a new shredder-like technology to separate magnets from audio modules and recover more rare earth elements, the Taz is the latest in a series of recycling advances led by Apple. The company also proposed further expanding the capabilities of its patented iPhone disassembly robot, Daisy, to disassemble 23 models of iPhones and license those patents to other companies and researchers for free. An additional robot, Dave, disassembles the Taptic engine and assists in the recovery of precious rare earth magnets, tungsten, and steel.
2022 Environmental Progress Report
In addition to graphing recycling innovation and material management progress, Apple’s new 2022 Environmental Progress Report is designed to be carbon-neutral throughout the global supply chain and all product lifecycles. It highlights important efforts and progress in waste reduction and promotion. Safer use of product materials.
Apple’s net emissions were flat in the year when many other companies saw a significant increase in their footprints and their revenues increased 33%. Apple has been carbon-neutral in its global operations since 2020 and has relied on 100% renewable energy to power its offices, stores and data centers since 2018.
Apple recently announced that suppliers have more than doubled their clean power usage compared to last year, with more than 10 gigawatts of the approximately 16 gigawatts of their total commitment over the next few years. As of this month, 213 of the company’s major manufacturing partners have pledged to supply renewable energy to all Apple production in 25 countries. In 2021, these renewable projects avoided 13.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions. This is equivalent to removing 3 million cars from the road in a year.
