Apple Machine Learning Director has resigned due to the Work-From-Office policy. Will more employees leave?

Good Fellow is just one of Apple’s employees who has resigned due to face-to-face rules enforced by a giant iPhone maker during an ongoing pandemic.

When the pandemic began, Apple workers and other technicians wanted a permanent WFH situation.

“I strongly believe that increasing flexibility was the best bet for my team,” Goodfellow shared in his latest report on 9To5Mac.

Goodfellow is one of the most valuable professionals working at Apple. He worked for Google in 2019 before becoming the ML director of the iPhone maker.

When he started working for Apple, people started calling Ian the father of GAN (generative adversarial network). This is the technology used by some Apple products, such as iPhone chargers.

Although he has had great success at Apple, Goodfellow does not seem to like the work policy from the office implemented by giant tech companies.

Gadget makers began re-implementing face-to-face work rules on April 11. However, as the pandemic is still going on, many employees are still against it.

With Goodfellow leaving Apple, some critics argued that this would further encourage the retirement of other prominent workers in the company, which could increase turnover.

Adverse effects of work from the office

Viccarbe explained that working in the office has several benefits, including improved teamwork and more efficient brainstorming.

However, as the global pandemic is still happening, face-to-face work conditions also have a negative impact on individuals who are currently using WFH.

These include:

  • Lack of privacy, especially for introverted staff.
  • Some people experience increased stress or anxiety when they are asked to return to the office.
  • Many people get distracted when they are in the room with other employees.

Recently, Apple has found some delays in custom Mac Studio and Mac Pro units.

Meanwhile, workers in Apple Maryland decided to form a union because they demanded better working hours and payments.
