Looking back at the highlights of Livingston's spring sports | Livingston / Tangipahoa

The conclusions of the baseball playoffs have put an end to the spring sports season of high school athletics. It’s worth noting some of the highlights that involve the Livingston Parish team and athletes.

At the top of the list is the Holden Softball Team, which has won the state title for the fifth consecutive year in six years. This is the latest entry in an impressive run featuring a large number of athletes and multiple coaches.

Also, it was Walker who ran the deep softball and participated in the second Class 5A semifinal in the last three tournaments. 2018 Class 2A Champion Doyle followed up on the title game Bath last season to advance to the semi-finals.

The other team championships in Livingston were from the Denham Springs bowling team. The Yellowjackets defeated Dutchtown in the semifinals, revenge the season’s only defeat, defeated CE Bird in a championship match and won the first state title since 2008.

In baseball, Doyle and Springfield have taken their rivalry to another level. After the team split the regular season game pairs and each won two runs on the street, the pair squared again in the semifinals of the Class 2A playoffs. Doyle defeated Springfield 4-2 to advance to the championship game, losing to Rosepine for the second year in a row.

Outdoor tracks and field championships at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium have always been a record-breaking performance and exciting finish scene.

In Class 5A, Denham Springs’ GNP won the women’s 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes 10.59 seconds. She came back near the end of the tournament and finished second with 3,200. Also, it was Porter Gibson, the jacket of the shot put boys, who won the second place finish.

Albany’s Cayden Boudreaux is second in class 3A girls 1,600, one better than last year’s finish.

In Class 2A, Holden’s women’s 4×200 relay team was second, and rocket pole vaulter Taylor Purvis was second in the men’s competition.

The results of the spring sports season need to satisfy us for now, but football, volleyball, cross-country and swimming will be held in August.

Sports notes

  • LHSAA recently published a list of Spring Academic Winners. The list of recognized student athletes included Austin Nelson of Albany, a boy bowling, and Jared Browning of Denham Springs. Brianna Deagle and Claire Dean from Denham Springs for women’s tennis. Live oak Jenae Adams and Emma Brooks, and softball walkers Arina Digrepont and Kara Jones. Walker’s Garrett Patrick, Doyle’s Braden McClin and Wyatt Morgan are playing baseball. All student athletes listed here had a 4.0 GPA.
  • Former Live Oak High prominent Preston Folkner probably didn’t have time to notice his postseason honor last week while SLU hosted one side of the Southland Conference tournament bracket. Falkner was selected as the first baseman for the First Baseman Conference. In the SLC tournament, he led the league with 13 home runs, scoring 14 RBIs, 55 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .611.
