Last week’s Google I / O keynote was probably the most gadget-rich Google presentation I’ve seen in nearly a decade. Google’s developer conferences frequently launch consumer hardware, but among the Pixel 6a, Pixel Buds, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel Watch, this keynote is as much as a software engineer on the Pixel. I felt that it was aimed at fans. And far from being a real, out-of-the-box device, many of Google’s new gadgets will be unavailable for the next few months.
The most interesting is the device that has come to be called the Google Pixel Tablet. Google hasn’t officially named this new slate yet. Instead, we just call it an “Android tablet.” Thanks to the renderings published on stage, we know what it looks like and use the Google Tensor processor. However, it’s unclear if this is the current first-generation Tensor for the Pixel 6. Or a second-generation SoC for the Pixel 7 series.
It also has a very vague launch window called “2023”, which could take a year or more before you can actually buy Google’s first Android tablet since 2015. there is. It’s strange that a product is pre-announced like this, especially if the lead time is very long. especially When the thing itself looks brilliantly unobtrusive.
Some Google watchers are excited. There aren’t many others.
On the outside, Pixel tablets are as popular as you can imagine. It doesn’t look like a device that challenges the best Android tablets. There is a large bezel that will not look out of place on the slate for half a year. One rear camera sticks out of the back panel and looks like it has a plastic coating like the Pixel 5. In fact, the whole thing looks like someone picked up the Pixel 5 and stretched it into a widescreen tablet form factor. There is a power button, volume control, and a large G on the back. It looks almost intentionally unobtrusive.
Therefore, it is difficult to look at a tablet like this and wonder what is important. Both announced this on Google in mid-2022. When It exists in the first place. When it comes to tablets, neither the company nor Android itself has a good track record, and the Pixel tablet is very similar. Just another Android tablet.
However, there is reason to think that this tablet may be more commercially successful than flops like the Nexus 9 and Pixel C. First, Google’s decision to display the Pixel tablet for the first time on I / O is a statement of intent. The future of Android tablets. In the last few months leading up to the launch of Android 12L, Google has claimed to be serious about Android on the big screen. However, many of us believe that the benefits of Android on tablets are just a side effect of Google’s pursuit of the foldable market. It’s Google to some extent that announces the “Android tablet,” and that money is in the mouth. (In the face of that, the release of one tablet a year later is a fairly low bet.)
But it’s also likely that this will be more than just a Pixel-branded Android tablet designed to do the typical tablet thing. The slate design is arguably closer to Google’s Nest line of smart home products than Pixel smartphones. The bright white front fits perfectly with the current Nest Hub Max. Then, you can dock this dock to the speaker base and charge it.
so Many wise people I think this is actually a Nest product. Specifically, the rumored removable Nest Hub reported by 9to5Google in March.
“According to sources proven to be familiar with Google’s plans, the next Nest Smart Display has a removable screen that can be used as a tablet. It’s a smart home device with a more traditional look. Can be attached to the base / speaker of. “
According to the report, this removable and dockable Nest Hub was scheduled to break the cover in 2022. But it’s easy to see how such a complex project will be delayed next year due to supply chain issues, engineering challenges, and so on.
Google has been adding tablet-style UI elements to smart displays over the past year. That’s why the full-on Nest Tablet, which can double as a smart display, makes a lot of sense for Google’s ecosystem. The large display on the “Pixel Tablet” is designed primarily for home use and shows that the rendering displayed on the I / O has no signs of cellular functionality. Design neutrality is also in line with Google’s smart home portfolio.
This could be a tablet intended to move around the house. Perhaps it can be docked in the kitchen or living room and used by multiple people in the family. It will be a rival to the Echo Show rather than a rival to the iPad. For example, I don’t think you can see the keyboard dock for this product. That said, the tablet features first introduced in Android 12L could make Google’s new tablet a more powerful all-round computer than Amazon’s.
We have plenty of time to ponder the final launch of Google’s Pixel tablet (or Nest tablet). But so far, despite the apparent pedestrian design, Google could surprise us with a unique view of the tablet form factor.
