1.1. Everyone knows that football is a serious business in the UK, so it’s no surprise that innocent mistakes turn into code red for the top British broadcasters. It also doesn’t make the whole story so ridiculous.
During today’s French Open coverage, the BBC’s new scroll at the bottom of the screen flashed with a simple message, “Manchester United is garbage.”
Obviously, this wasn’t the typical update you’ll see in any scroll.
Not long after, the BBC had the Anchor read a detailed apology, including two references, rather than one to those who may have been angry with the shot at the football club.
“Some time ago, you might have noticed something strange about running along the ticker at the bottom of the screen in the news about Manchester United,” Newswoman said. “My hope is that Manchester United fans aren’t angry with it.”
Now, it’s funny to imply that someone might be angry with something completely nonsense, but since we’re talking about sports fans here, anything is possible.
Anchor then explained that someone was being taught how to use the ticker, and during training he typed up and sent a Manchester United diss.
Would you like to take a moment here and be amazed at how elegant British accents sound? Here in the United States, he says, “Several dopes are wandering around and I decide to scroll to tear the football team.” In the UK, they say, “They were just writing random things and not serious.” It sounds very dignified.
Anchor then assured everyone that he regretted what happened to the BBC, saying: But it was certainly a mistake and was not intended to be displayed on the screen. I just thought I should explain it to you. “
What I like about this story is the combination of two things that are currently out of control. That is, apologizing for everything and being a bit far from sports fans. Imagine thinking that some weirdos can be offended and think they need to apologize for something very benign.
Total garbage.
