Wow, Apple really doesn't want you to repair your iPhone with a self-service repair program

Apple launched the Apple Self Service Repair program in April of this year. This allows US customers to purchase genuine Apple parts and tools to repair their iPhones themselves. After all, repairing an Apple device yourself seems to waste a lot of work, money, and time, even if you use the official repair manual.

Verge’s Sean Hollister recorded an experience with Apple’s self-service repair program trying to fix a battery issue on the iPhone 13 Mini. But after self-correction, he wrote, “I can’t really recommend it at all.”

“… I’m secretly wondering if Apple likes it that way,” Hollister added.

This is why he doesn’t recommend it

To begin the self-service repair process, you must first check Apple’s repair manual. After you’ve identified what you need to fix the problem, you can visit an Apple Self-Service Repair Shop to order the parts and tools you need.

Apple will allow the toolkit to be rented for $ 49 a week, free of charge. However, to replace the iPhone 12 screen, you’ll need to fork a total of $ 285.35, for example. It’s cheaper than Apple’s over-the-counter charge of $ 365, but the overall experience doesn’t seem to be worth it.

“I thought Apple would send me small Box of screwdriver, spudger and pliers. After all, I have a mini iPhone. Instead, I found two giant pelican cases —£ 79 Tool —On my front pouch. It was unbelievable that Apple was thinking about how big and heavy they would pay to ship in both directions, “Hollister wrote.

The whole process seemed overwhelming to me. There were only two huge and heavy cases, a manual to help get started and myself. The device fix kit included a large machine for sucking the screen, a “heating pocket”, and many other small items that Hollister could help fix it.

I hope someone can easily repair the iPhone on a large machine. However, according to Hollister, it was difficult to handle the entire modification experience. For example, the “blade” kept getting stuck in the corner of the phone screen, dropping Apple’s little fasteners, and the fixing kit seemed incomplete.

“At this point, there was still a lot of sticky glue around the sides of the iPhone’s frame, although it was explained that pulling it with tweezers (not in the box) would peel it off into some large pieces. After picking up a small blurry chunk of glue for 10 minutes, I gave up, “said Hollister.

However, according to Hollister, the most frustrating part of the process is that the iPhone didn’t recognize the battery as genuine, even after using genuine Apple parts with genuine tools. You will need to dial up to Apple’s third-party logistics company after the repair so that you can verify the part. This is something you need to worry about.

Prices for the entire process seemed cheap at first, but Hollister said it wasn’t. In total, he has $ 69 for a new battery, $ 49 for renting Apple tools for a week, and a whopping $ 1,200 for a toolkit that needs to be confiscated if the kit isn’t returned within 7 days. Had to spend my credit card. Delivery time (US $ 1,319.95 total).

“If it were just me, I would have stopped the entire process before Apple shipped the £ 79 device to my house,” Hollister said.

Apple warns that the vast majority of customers who have no experience in electrical device repair should go to “a professional repair shop with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts” instead. And you can see why. It may be hell to fix it yourself. But I have to conclude that this is what Apple wants.
