In a press release, Apple said it is expanding support for the common passwordless sign-in standard created by the three companies. FIDO Alliance And the World Wide Web Consortium. This new feature enables websites and apps to provide consumers with consistent, secure, and easy password-less sign-in across devices and platforms.
Hundreds of technology companies and service providers around the world, as well as the three major technology companies, have worked with the FIDO Alliance within the W3C to create password-less sign-in standards. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have led the development of this enhanced set of features and are currently building support for their respective platforms.
How does sign-in without a password work?
Apple, Google, and Microsoft platforms already support the FIDO Alliance standard, which enables password-free sign-in on billions of industry-leading devices. However, users had to sign in to each website or app on each device before using the passwordless feature. Users will be able to take advantage of two new features for more seamless and secure passwordless sign-in.
- Allows users to automatically access FIDO sign-in credentials (sometimes called “passkeys”) on many devices without having to re-register all accounts.
- Allows users to use FIDO authentication on their mobile devices to sign in to apps or websites on nearby devices, regardless of the OS platform or browser they are running on.
These new features will be available on Apple, Google, and Microsoft platforms later next year.
According to Apple, the new method protects against phishing and makes sign-in more secure when compared to traditional multi-factor technologies such as passwords and one-time passcodes sent via SMS.
Kurt Knight, Apple’s Senior Director of Platform Product Marketing, said: “Working with the industry to provide better protection, eliminate password vulnerabilities, and establish new, more secure sign-in methods is a product that provides maximum security and a transparent user experience. It is at the heart of our commitment to build and is all about retaining our users. “Personal information is safe.”
“A complete transition to a passwordless world begins with consumers making it a natural part of their lives. A viable solution is better than passwords and traditional multi-factor authentication methods currently in use. It must also be safe, easy, and fast, “said Alex Simons, Corporate Vice President of Identity Program Management at Microsoft.
Mark Riser, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, said: FIDO-based technology for Chrome, ChromeOS, Android And other platforms will be used to encourage app and website developers to hire and ensure that people around the world are safely away from the risks and hassles of passwords. ”
