Google is updating Android Auto to fit all touchscreens of different sizes in today's cars

Android Auto is now being redesigned, focusing on the evolving nature of vehicle touch screens.

According to Google, the new split-screen display will be standard on all Android Auto users, giving them access to key features such as navigation, media player, and messages all from one screen. Previously, split screen display was only available to specific vehicle owners. This is the default user experience for all Android Auto customers.

“Previously, there was another screen mode available on a very limited number of cars,” said Rod Lopez, lead product manager for Android Auto. “It’s now available regardless of the type, size, and form factor of the display you’re using. This is a very exciting update.”

Android Auto adapts to all types of touch screens, regardless of size. Automakers are starting to be creative with the size of infotainment displays, installing everything from large portrait screens to long vertical screens that look like surfboards. According to Google, Android Auto will be seamlessly compliant with all these types.

“We’ve seen some really interesting innovations from the industry to go to these very large portrait displays that go into these very wide landscape displays,” Lopez said. “And, as you know, Android Auto will be able to support and adapt to all of this, and you will be able to take advantage of all these features at your fingertips as a user.”

Lopez is a car, especially in luxury cars such as the 56-inch wide hyperscreen (actually three separate screens embedded in one glass) like the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the 33-inch Cadillac Lyric. LED infotainment display that admitted that the screen is getting bigger. He said Google is partnering with automakers to adapt Android Auto to this trend.

“This is part of the new motivation behind this redesign and better fits our products to these vehicles with these large portrait displays and large widescreen displays. We were able to do that, “says Lopez. “That’s why our approach works very closely with these OEMs. [original equipment manufacturers] To make sure things make sense and work. “

The larger the screen, the more likely it is that the driver will be distracted by the display. Recent research has shown that drivers who select music on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto have a slower reaction time than drivers who smoke cannabis. Google has been trying to solve this problem for the last few years, but they haven’t yet reached a definitive solution.

Lopez said safety is a “top priority” for the Android Auto product team. This allows you to work closely with the OEM to fully integrate the experience into your car design and minimize distraction.

In addition to adapting to screens of various sizes, Google is also rolling out several other updates. Users will soon be able to reply to text messages with standardized replies that can be sent with a single tap.

There are also more entertainment options. Android Automotive, Google’s embedded Android Auto system, will now support TubiTV and EpixNow streaming services. Also, Android smartphone owners can cast their content directly to the car screen.
