For the award-winning group of University of Houston-Victoria Master of Business Administration students, a semester of business analysis has proven to be more than just a group project. The group of four left the 29th UHV Business College Master of Business Administration Case Conference with confidence in their business skills and knowledge.

“All four of us come from different industries, and each of us was able to innovate and understand the problem from a wide range of experiences,” said Gavin Menezes of Houston. “I feel really fortunate to be part of such a strong team.”

Menezes, his wife Tanisha Menezes, Katy’s Arisbeth Harvey, and Beeville’s Arturo Rodriguez belonged to the team that ranked first in the conference. The event was held on May 7th through Microsoft Teams, with 46 students and 12 teams, 26 business leaders and UHV College of Business graduates.

Graduate students at the Strategic Management Seminar analyzed the company both individually and in teams during the spring semester. This semester, students prepared a presentation about Southwest Airlines.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of MBA students participating in the program have been flexible in balancing their studies with work and family life.

“All teams did their best to advise Southwest Airlines, and there were many great results and results,” Salazar said. “I’m happy with the number of good presentations at the meeting.”

At the contest, students needed to identify Southwest Airlines issues and offer solutions. The first group analyzed the company and determined that one of the key issues was the lack of pilots. The team concluded that with regard to the shortage of employees, the company needs to find out how to care for pilots and their families and what strategies they use to retain and hire pilots. .. Gavin Menezes has been a pilot for 18 years and has been able to provide a group of projects with some of his personal experience. He decided to get an MBA to work a day in airline management.

When it comes to questions like “what is this?” Or “this is limited to contracts and regulations” in terms of where the boundaries of the problem are, it gives some insight into that aspect of the industry. I can. “Menezes said.

Their recommendations included improvements at the Pilot Training Center. Contact and engage with local airlines. Hire a retired pilot as a pilot training instructor. And use their brand vision to become the “world’s most beloved airline” for hiring new pilots.

According to Arturo Rodriguez, this solution needed to be both profitable and achievable.

“We wanted to find a happy medium to make both our business and our employees happy, because when both people are happy with their work, the business can continue to be profitable. Because, “he said.

Everything they learned from UHV and the project provided them with the skills and knowledge they could use in any administrative role, Tanisha Menezes said. She works as a senior manager at a health care research company.

“This course and all other MBA courses have helped me become a better manager,” she said. “It’s not about submitting an issue, it’s about participating in discussions, reading material, and thinking beyond solutions.”

For Arisbeth Harvey, who works in the supply chain industry, the Capstone course challenged her unlike any other MBA course. The group appreciated the feedback Salazar provided to them throughout the semester.

“There were a lot of back-and-forth comments, and in the end we were able to answer his question and stop the presentation,” Harvey said. “Dr. Salazar was a great instructor to attend this course.”

Overall, Gavin Menezes appreciates his experience with the MBA program at UHV, as he has had a hard time earning a degree in higher education as a career and immigrant in the past.

“In my opinion, UHV is one of the leading programs in the country to help students like me succeed here in the United States,” he said. “When I came to UHV, it was clear that the university was investing in the right people and resources to help students overcome barriers and earn an accredited degree.”

Charlie Huang, an associate professor of business administration at UHV, is another instructor of the Capstone Course and praised the work done by the students of the program in the contest.

“I was impressed with the students’ efforts to challenge themselves during this difficult time to finish their educational journey at UHV,” says Huang. “Through commitment and hard work, they know they can set higher goals and achieve something they couldn’t imagine before. I’m convinced that all faculty members at UHV Business College are proud of them. I am. “
