Don’t overlook the champion who defends twice
2 weeks ago Lightning’s hope of winning three consecutive Stanley Cups It was decreasing. They lost Game 5 of the first round series with the Maple Leafs on May 10 and lagging behind 3–2, but stopped losing with an overtime victory in Game 6 and went to Game 7 on Toronto’s Home Ice. I won and advanced to 2nd place. Round. What are their awards for surviving such a harsh series? A date with the Panthers, the owner of NHL’s best regular season record.
But Tampa Bay did the quick job of the President’s Trophy winnerLast night, I finished the sweep at home with a 2-0 victory. The star, like in the two cup runs in front of the team, Andrey Vasilevsky.. He continued to curb Florida’s powerful attacks, making 49 saves (with a high playoff career, excluding 61 saves in five overtime games in 2020). The Panthers scored more goals in the NHL this season than anyone else, but scored only three goals in four games against Lightning...
Vasilevsky was modest when he reviewed his performance after Game 4.
“It’s my job to give the boys a chance to win. I think they did a pretty good job throughout the series,” he said.
“Nothing in particular. I think that’s the way the whole team is playing in those games. Throughout the series, blocked shots, sacrifices, and boys who literally struggle to stop the puck are constantly blocking. It was done, “he added. “It’s a huge effort by everyone on our team. Obviously I’m not the only one. I’m just trying to do what I can.”
Vasilevsky was almost invincible in the previous two postseasons, but struggled in the first round with Reefs, scoring 4.00 GAA in the first six games of the series. Since then, he has averaged less than one goal allowed per game.
Bolt won the 10-time playoff seriesParticipated in the Canadiens of the 1970s and the Islanders of the 80s, and was the only franchise to win many of its series. They aim to win the Eastern Conference Finals 11 times in a row against the winners of the Hurricane’s-Rangers series. Carolina holds a 2 to 1 lead in the series in Game 4 tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Yesterday’s SIQ: Which professional golfer born May 23, 1934 shared the name with the current NFL backup quarterback?
answer: Mason Rudolph. He was part of the US Ryder Cup team, who won the PGA Tour five times and won in 1971, but came across another interesting anecdote about his career.
In 1960, Rudolph participated in a television broadcast match with the great Sam Snead. Filmed on a Bermuda course in December 1959, the match became controversial after being aired on NBC in April 1960.
On the 12th hole of the match, Sneed found that he had too many clubs in his bag. Under the Rules of Golf, Sneed should have confiscated the match. But instead of fooling TV viewers at his home from the opportunity to enjoy the last third of the round, Sneed continued to notice himself. Instead, he deliberately decided to lose the match.
“That was an honest mistake,” Sneed apologized. And he insisted that nothing was wrong with his decision. “I didn’t throw a golf game for any amount of money,” he added.
From the vault: May 24, 1965
The second battle between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston on May 25, 1965 was one of the most anticipated boxing matches in history. Ali won the first battle in a tremendous upset and rematch against the backdrop of all sorts of controversy (Ari’s recent name change, the move of the battle from Boston to the small town of Lewiston, Maine, based in Massachusetts. Concerns about the promoter’relationship with organized crime) was a flash point. And even with it all set aside, it was a fascinating match between two talented heavyweights.
SI’s Tex Maule has high hopes for the fight and provided this forecast in a magazine that week.
“After the eighth round of the night of May 25, in the small and unlikely town of Lewiston, Cassius Marcellus Clay (who will be called Muhammad Ali) is to his world heavyweight championship. Prove that claim. By knocking out the challenger Sony Liston. “
Mole was right about one thing. Ali knocked out Liston. The decisive punch was thrown in the first round instead of the eighth round. Ali’s right hand connected to Liston’s chin so quickly that no one believed he actually landed the punch. After all, the match lasted only two minutes.
As Liston tried to recover, Ali ran around the ring and cursed him. At that point, SI photographer Neil Leifer took the most famous photo of Ali’s boxing history standing on top of a lifeless liston. Raifer’s full-color photographs occupied all pages of the June 7 issue. Sports Illustrated..
On that same issue, Mohr wrote that there is no doubt that Ali’s victory is valid. The so-called “phantom punch” was nothing.
“The knockout punch itself was thrown at an amazing speed that differentiated Clay from other heavy weights. He leaned out of one of Liston’s heavy left jabs, planted his left foot firmly, and his right hand was Liston’s. I put it on my left arm and pushed it into the side of Liston’s chin. The blow was so powerful that I lifted Liston’s left foot, on which most of his weight was well off the canvas. It was also powerful enough to drop him instantly — first on his hands and knees, then on his back. “
Still, many continued to be convinced that Liston threw the fight. Mole wrote:
“There was some predictable protest by the press and politicians calling for the abolition of boxing in the wake of the Lewiston battle. The bill banning sports includes New York, where Clay’s next battle may take place. Planned by several legislatures. Older former champions, including Jack Dempsey and Jean Tanny, declared a swift victory in a deadly blow to boxing. “Because I knew what would happen, I didn’t go, “Dempsey said quite vaguely.
Of course, they were wrong. Ali’s career was still in its infancy.
